Symbols on the Flag

THE EAGLE: The first image on the Civil Rights flag is an eagle. The eagle is a symbol of freedom.

THE SCALES OF JUSTICE: The second image on the flag is the red scales. The red scales are a symbol of God’s justice.

THE WHITE FIELD: The third image is the white field behind the eagle and the scales of justice. It symbolizes commitment

THE COLORFUL STRIPES OF EQUALITY: The fourth image on the flag is the stripes. The eight colorful stripes symbolize equality.

THE TWELVE STARS: These stars represent 12 themes and leaders who have and still are impacting the civil rights movement in the past, present, and future.

The Star of Race Relations – Anna Eleanor Roosevelt
The Star of Education – Julius Rosenwald
The Star of the Children – John Robert Lewis
The Star of Music – Mahalia Jackson
